Depressed? Simple Tips for Happiness

The following are some easy to follow steps that can help you get out of the worry habit and feel a new joy in your life. These are just simple tips and you need to seek professional help if you are severely depressed.

Be Active
Physical activity makes your mind energetic and lets you forget your burdens. Don’t lie down in the couch and ponder and ruminate over the unhappy events of your life. Research has proven that 30 minutes of exercise a day and 3 to 5 times a week can greatly reduces the symptoms of depression. Even shorter courses of exercise can improve the mood in the immediate time period. Exercise may release the feel-good endorphins, release muscle tension, help you sleep better, and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It also serves as a distraction where mind can dwell on happy thoughts that are different from the routine thoughts. Several studies have reported the beneficial effects of yoga in depression, stress and anxiety.

Sleep Well
Sleep has been found to be of immense use in fighting away the depression and the feelings associated with it. Conversely sleep disorders can also cause depression. If you suspect you may be having a sleep disorder, do consult your physician. More than 70 per cent of people suffering from depression have problems with their sleep. Sleep well at night and awake fresh in the morning. Improvement in the sleep is often an easy indicator that you are moving away from depression. To get better sleep avoid caffeine (tea, coffee, cola), alcohol in the evening and heavy meals/exercise before bedtime.   Listening to soothing music, reading books and warm water bath can help some people. If you have difficulty with normal sleep, your physician can evaluate you and advice appropriate management with medication if necessary.

Talk to a Friend/Family member
Talk to a friend or family member you can trust. He/She may help you with emotionally difficult situations. People with depression are vulnerable and conversations with a close person can help you cope up with the stress in a better manner. They will listen to you and may encourage you to seek professional help. If the cause of the depression is a person mutually known to both, then your friend/family member may help in resolving the problems.

Distraction
Get something to distract your attention from the ongoing emotional turmoil. Watch a movie or read a book or go out with friends or play with your pets. It will temporarily make you feel good. You can also get some new activity partners. New people and new activities can make you appreciate the wonders of the life on earth. It will also make you change the routine pattern. Go for it. Start something new, anything from learning a musical instrument to learning to golf or horse riding can help you.

Gratitude
One of the easiest ways to break your unhappiness is feeling gratitude for all the good things in your life. Every individual has a lot of wonderful aspects in their life to display gratitude. This may be anything from wonderful climate in their residential city, the ability to see, the ability to walk, the ability to read and write in a world millions of people are still illiterate. We can be thankful for being born in an internet era where communication and interactions have reached unprecedented levels, thankful to be born in a free country that respects individual freedom, thankful for the wonderful spouse, parents and children we have etc. It’s a good practice to mentally thank for all the good things for 2 minutes in the early morning after waking up and at night before sleep.
