How to beat food cravings ?

beat food cravings
A food craving is an intense desire to consume a specific food, and is different from normal hunger. It may or may not be related to specific hunger. Beyond the physiological reasons for food cravings, they often have something to do with emotion and desire. Food cravings arise to satisfy emotional needs, such as calming stress and reducing anxiety,

Carbohydrate craving for sweets, cakes, potato chips may be caused by low blood sugar. This condition can occur when you have not eaten for several hours or because of emotional frustration and have been noted to be present prior to menstrual period because of hormonal fluctuations. Complex carbohydrate like fruits, vegetablesand whole grain cereals can reduce the craving for refined carbohydrate. High protein non-fat milk and low fat cheese can also cut this craving.

Salt craving such as pickles, potato chips can result from salt depletion caused by excessive perspiration or a stress condition, which result in stimulation of adrenal glands. Salt craving can be reduced by substituting with high vitamin C foods like lemon juice, orange juice, banana, raw tomatoes or strawberries.

Caffeine is present in coffee, tea and carbonated drinks. Cocoa and chocolate contain theobromine ( a caffeine- type substance). Many people are actually addicted both physiologically and metabolically to caffeine and will suffer emotional withdrawal symptoms, which include headache, fatigue, nausea, irritability and even craving for sugar.  To reduce this addiction, you have to gradually reduce the caffeine in your diet by substituting with herbal tea, clear soda other than colas.

People who are unhappy or in bad mood often turn to high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods, like pizza or extra cheese sandwiches. These foods contain protein and fat both of which help to produce good feeling endorphins. On the other hand they also produce tons of calories, which help to destroy any well – intentioned diet plan.To cause an increase in production of endorphins, substitute high fibre, whole-grain cereals and bread for the refine carbohydrate and substitute lean protein, yogurt, skinless chicken and fish for extra unwanted fat calories. These complex carbohydrate and high protein food produce both endorphins and serotonin to keep your mood happy and euphoric.
