You can Eat Out and Still Lose Weight

Do you dread the prospect of going out to eat, fearing that all your efforts to lose calories will go down the drain? That’s exactly the dilemma that plagues women all over the world. And therefore, they try their best to overcome all temptations to eat out. However, the results of a new study will seem music to all the women who love to eat out but are afraid of piling up calories. A new study, published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, has found out that individuals can eat out and still lose calories.

The study was carried out by the researchers from the University of Texas at Austin on 35, healthy women around the age of menopause, that is, between the ages of 40 to 59 years. The researchers chose the women of this age group, as these women are the most predisposed to pile up weight in the abdominal region, a high risk factor for the development of cardiovascular ailments and diabetes. All of the participants ate out at least thrice every week.

The women were subjected to 2 hourly sessions for six weeks in which they were educated about the methods to reduce calorie intake while eating out, mindful eating meditations and strategies to change their behavior while eating. The program was called as Mindful Restaurant Eating. The main aim of the program was to prevent weight gain. However, at the end of the program, it was noticed that the participants had not only prevented gaining weight but had successfully lost weight. Their average daily caloric intake as well as fat intake had gone down and their diet related self-efficacy had improved.

The researchers came to the conclusion that one can eat out without gaining weight, provided one develops the skills needed to prevent weight gain while eating out. This may be particularly important to maintain long term health, especially for those women who have to eat out as part of their daily professional routine.
